Wrap up from the 2016 Harvest Festival

We were blessed with amazing weather at our annual Harvest Festival on Sunday 20 March 2016. More than 3000 people enjoyed a day of music, dancing and food that celebrated Albanian culture.

Our president Enver Sabri said it was one of the bigger crowds we’ve had. “It’s the first year we’ve really advertised and opened it up to everyone.”

The festival was also attended by Kosovo ambassador Sabri Kicmari from Canberra, Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed, Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Dinny Adem, and members of the Albanian North Sunshine Eagles Soccer Team.

The event formed part of the Shepparton Festival and was proudly sponsored by Shepparton Show Me.

Video – Shepparton Albanian Flamur Celebrations

On Saturday, 28 November 2015, the Shepparton Albanian Society celebrated the anniversary of Albania’s Declaration of Independence with a function at the GV Hotel, Shepparton, Australia.

As part of the celebrations, a group of local Albanian children performed a series of dances set to traditional music.

Led by teacher Aida Zeqo, opportunities such as these work to ensure the traditions of our culture are kept alive for the next generation of Australian Albanians.

Commemorating our ancestors

The Shepparton Albanian Moslem Society will be commissioning a commemorative monument in Shepparton’s sister city Korçë.

The monument will be created to honour those who have emigrated from the Korçë region to Shepparton or surrounding towns.

These individuals and families played a crucial role in the formation of the Albanian community in Victoria, and the creation of a sister city relationship between Shepparton and Korçë.

WHERE WILL THE MONUMENT BE BUILT?
The monument will be built at a central garden location in Korce, Albania. We are currently awaiting final approval from the local Council in Korce, and will announce further details once confirmed.

WHEN WILL THE MONUMENT BE CREATED?
Construction of the monument is due to commence in late 2015.

Additional plaque orders will be accepted after this date, however placement of names on the plaque will be favoured to those who order before June 30.

HOW CAN I BE INVOLVED?
You can show your support with two options:

Option one: Buy a plaque
Plaques can be ordered for an individual or a family (see application form for an example). Please note, plaque sizes will remain the same, so the text size for a family plaque will be noticeably smaller compared to an individual plaque.
Cost: $500 per plaque

Option two: Become a sponsor
Individuals, couples or a family can instead choose to become a sponsor and donate funds to the project, with their names engraved at the back of the monument.
Cost: $300 per donation

Our first Autumn Harvest Pack Day

Today at 7.30am, on a freezing Autumn morning, a group of Shepparton orchardists and volunteers came together to pack fruit as a fundraising effort for our Society and other local charities.

While today’s session focused on packing Packham and Josephine pears, another day is scheduled in the coming weeks for Pink Lady apples.

Check out the video for more information about the project.
