President of the Shepparton Albanian Society Enver Sabri, was proud to receive the award on behalf of the hardworking Festival committee, it’s longtime supporters and the local Albanian community.
“It’s an honour to be part of this gathering here today. The local Albanian community has a strong history here in Greater Shepparton, and we are very proud to add to the multicultural community through our annual celebration of food, family and music,” said Mr Sabri.
Shepparton Albanian Society Committee member Reg Qemal took time to acknowledge the army of volunteers and supporters who made the Festival possible year after year. “It truly is a team effort and would not be the great success it is without your passion, commitment and hard work”.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Councillor Kim O’Keeffe congratulated all awarded recipients and acknowledged the outstanding contributions they have made to Greater Shepparton.
“Thank you to those who took the time to submit a nomination to recognise their fellow citizens, it is fantastic to see individuals doing great things for their community and it is important that we recognise and celebrate them,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
Awards were presented in Arcadia, Dookie, Mooroopna, Murchison, Shepparton, Tatura and Toolamba and the Greater Shepparton Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Event of the Year were chosen from these regional winners.
Yesterday we celebrated the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan with morning prayers at our Mosque in Shepparton.
This gave us the perfect opportunity to present a donation of $3000 to local not-for-profit organisation GV Hospice Care. Hospice supports terminally ill patients and their families in a number of ways, including specialist medical, nursing and pastoral care, bereavement counselling and volunteer support.
Many Albanian families have utilised the free services provided by GV Hospice, so we felt it was a fitting choice when deciding which local charity to support.
Funds donated were raised as part of the two fruit packing days we held earlier in the year. Apples and pears were donated by local Albanian orchardists and were packed by an army of volunteers before being sent off for wholesale.
The balance of the funds raised from this project will go towards a major upgrade to the external grounds at the Shepparton mosque. More will be revealed very soon!
